Poetry with Emma Kathryn Harris

Poetry stirs the soul and speaks to the mind to understand the beauty we call life.

Mala Naidoo, poet, Random Heart Poetry: Light and Shade

Many of my readers of Emma’s Garden Corner are coming to know my gardening tips and tricks. I love flowers, and all the calming emotions they give us. Gardening is a healing.

Poetry is also a healing.

Poetry, to me, is a gateway to the heart.

Poets see people, objects, and events beyond the surface. They see a past, a story, and a longing. They see all the colors, rather than black and white. And with people, there is a heart that holds the memories and traumas that can only be expressed through feeling, through understanding.

I’ve been writing poetry since I was six-years-old. Unfortunately, I have neglected to do anything with it, other than the occasional submission to magazines.

Now, I have put together a collection of poetry, which I am planning to publish soon. I am researching small presses to find a good fit (poetry is a tough sell). My collection comprises poems on gardens, music, love, creation, and being human.

In the meantime, I am submitting various poems to literary magazines to establish a name for Emma and connect me with poetry, something that is long overdue.

Reaching a poetry writing goal

In April, National Poetry Month, my goal was to write 100 poems. By April 30, I had written 98. Not bad!

Since April, I have written many more and continue to write a few a week. I’ve noticed that the more I write poetry, the more it evolves.

My current women’s fiction manuscript is waiting for my return as I wrap up my poetry collection. More on that later!

As you can see, I am pretty varied in my writing. The key is that I am always writing, whether poetry, fiction, copywriting, you name it.

If you would like to read some of my poems, be updated as to the book’s progress, and you enjoy the photographs I share on my website, then follow me on Facebook or Instagram, where I post more frequently than my website.
