Housewifey Humor
Reading through my mail gives me a delight most find unrelenting. What one calls “junk” mail I like to think of as information telling me I need something I did not realize I have survived without.
The catalogs are my favorite. They show pages of products, laid out with sale prices that indicate I must act promptly to buy before the television, or face cream, or pool noodle is sold out, even though I don’t have a pool. The marketing is quite convincing.
“What do we need a pop-up tent for?” my husband will ask as I add the item to my cart.
“You never know,” I’ll reply, “but it’s on sale and the family in the image are having fun. Look—they are roasting marshmallows over a fire as they sit next to the tent.”
“We don’t even camp. You hate the outdoors.”
I shake my head because he doesn’t understand what “on sale” means.
As I skim through emails that many consider spam, I like to think of them as friendly reminders that my mortgage could have a better rate, or the website on a business I don’t have could attract visitors using the correct SEO. The retail newsletters I sign up for always keep me informed that I am in the final hours of securing my discount to a product I have multiples of under my cabinet. I click “add to cart” and am told there are only three left in stock. Phew!
I cannot help but remain grateful that the piles of mail and endless marketing emails are always thinking of my needs. Where would I be without the constant reminders from businesses of how they think I should spend my money?
Now, where to put that tent…
