Have you ever noticed there are a lot of poems about roses? Roses, usually a symbol of love, are an excellent poetic subject. The following poem was written when I realized one of my three knockout rose bushes suddenly decided not to grow this year.
The Rose Bush
There is a void where once you grew
strong and full and beautiful,
while beside you grow the other two
bushes bursting full of roses
they develop untouched, unharmed,
you, a small stump, as if you never were
and that is how some of us are
vibrant, full of life and beauty
until we cannot produce the strength we once had
overshadowed by those who seem to thrive
maybe it is to give us pause
to regain our stability and flourish once again.
